Day 79:

“New Lands” (2012) by Justice

“New Lands” (2012) by Justice

I was pleased to charter “new land” with you, like Lewis and Clarke.

You lead our trip to Hawaii.  And I even diarized it – with those great photos.  You were Cook and I was Banks.

I soon decided to take the “biggest trip” with you, like Hilary and Norgay.

Though we really didn’t mind, we burnt a lot of people who got in our way to our successes together.  Choose any of those Pizzaro brothers, I’ll be another.

You were my “second voyage” and I enjoyed my time with you.  I was Hawkins.  You were Drake.

We discovered all the ‘golds’ and excesses, like Carter and Herbert.  It was fun … to a point.

But I think we ascended too high.  We reached the highest of all points.  But soon ran out of oxygen and were floating aimlessly.  You were Armstrong.  I was Buzz.

And before anyone knew it, including ourselves, we ended up tired, on fire and late, like Burke and Wills.  That was twenty years ago.

You had trekked a new path.  As did I.  But it was still surprising to meet you again at our daughter’s graduation, yesterday.  “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”  We talked for a while and said goodbye when it was all done.  She went on with her own ‘second voyage’ with a guy named Dan.  I went on my third with Michelle.

Though certainly, we both told our daughter how we hung on to the other as much as we could, like Shackleton hung onto Scott, but knew we should let the other go because they’d be headed for certain death, as what did with Scott.  And that, in separate life, we are Amundsen – successful and undoubted.
