Barry: Me in Pieces
A self-portrait photograph (see left) has been segmented into 100 pieces and shuffled. Each day I receive a single segment to paint (each painting is 175mm square) and, because of the enlarged detail of the segment I am unaware of exactly how each individual piece connects with the whole.
Painting by eye and directly onto my substrate, I attempt to replicate the segment by my judgements in accuracy, scale, form and colour.
This is a mixed media project utilizing oil, enamel and water based paints, my task being to gain some coherence from the non-compliant interaction of mutually exclusive mediums (acrylic and oil), as well as combining contrasting categorizations (abstraction and realism).
